What's “WebRing”?
Need Info?
If you've never navigated or belonged to a Ring before, you may think of WebRings as small societies, the members of which are Web sites, all sharing a common theme, style or characteristic, and all linked in a continuous chain -- i.e., you can navigate all the way back to the point where you started, if you'd like, visiting on the way all the sites that are members of that Ring you are navigating. Additionally, you have access to the Ring Hub (click here, for the example of one), where all member sites of a Ring are listed.
How handy are WebRings?...you may be wondering...
WebRings are excellent alternatives to Search Engines, and in fact enjoy a few advantages over the latter, in a number of ways, even though WebRings offer a modest variety of Web sites, by comparison -- the Search Engines including just about the entire Web.
Let's take a concrete example, so you can more easily see how useful WebRings can be:
Suppose you wish to find, on the Web, an e-book that you can either download free, or buy at an affordable price. Your neighbor's kid is just turning nine and is crazy about the father's computer, so an e-book proper for children would be just that exciting gift you'd like to have for the boy on his birthday.
So, you will try a search in Google, or another search engine.
Well, instead, you can go to WebRing, and either browse the many sections there, organized by theme, or use WebRing's search, pretty much the same way as you'd do on the Google simple search screen.
I bet you will find your e-book faster via a WebRing than you would via a Search Engine!
For there are a number of advantages, at WebRing, which search engines just do not or cannot offer. A few of these advantages are mentioned below:
- You find a number of Rings for each theme, subject, or activity, related to which you need to search for a good site to visit.
Additionally, each of these Rings includes a number of Web sites that are compatible with the main theme of the Ring.
Thus, you easily have a very good selection at hand!
- Unlike some of the Search Engines, Rings offer no such things as the possibility of buying search words, top placements, and the like, all of which ensure the placement of certain sites on top of the search results.
When we search, after all, we'd like to find what we truly look for, not what advertisers or sites after popularity and profit try to impose on us.
On WebRings, each site provides a description of what it offers, and you can look through the list of sites in order to decide the ones you wish to visit.
Or you can surf from site to site, forward or backward, using WebRing's handy Navigation Bar, return to the list of Rings, etc. (there are yet other surfing possibilities -- take a look at MieNet's Rings Navigation Bars, and you will see a few more).
- How easy or how difficult do you imagine it'd be for your site to appear on Google's first results pages? You know that if your site is listed too far back, there is hardly a chance that you will get visitors via Search Engines.
Well, join a WebRing, and your site will always be at hand to any visitor to the Ring!
WebRings offer yet more advantages, both to someone looking for something in particular, on the Web, and for someone who has a Web page.
